EPISODE 1.10 – REVENGE IS SWEET…

Duncan is challenged by a woman with impressive sword-skills and an agenda. But if she isn't an Immortal, what game is she playing?

Written by Loraine Despres

Directed by Ray Austin

1989: As party-goers below get ready to welcome in the new year, Duncan MacLeod and Walter Reinhardt (Christoph Ohrt) duel atop the skyscraper. Duncan narrowly escapes losing and Reinhardt ultimately plummets into the harbour far below.

1992: An exotic-looking woman, Rebecca Lord (Vanity) comes into the antique store interested in purchasing a rare sword and challenges MacLeod to a ‘friendly’ fencing match later to test the blade and its provenance. Tessa isn’t amused, but as Lord isn’t an Immortal, Duncan is intrigued enough to agree to the meeting. During their match, Duncan notices a signature sword move he recognises as Reinhardt’s and it becomes clear his past is coming back to haunt him.

But is Rebecca part of a plan to kill MacLeod or a pawn herself? With both Tessa and Richie targeted, MacLeod will have to decide his next move quickly…

A note of interest: The flashback in this episode is stated in the script to be 1728, and this is the date that was used by Gillian Horvath when constructing the official Highlander Timeline for the Highlander Series Bible at the beginning of her tenure on the show, beginning with Season Two, in 1993.  This date was again utilized in Donna Lettow’s Watcher Chronicles CD-ROM and ultimately found its way onto the Highlander: The Series DVDs.  However, sharp-eyed viewers would note that 1728 cannot be the correct year for the flashback because Duncan MacLeod is seen wielding his katana in his encounter with Walter Reinhardt in the flashback.  If he’d used another sword the date could stand… but, as we know that Duncan received his katana from Hideo Koto in Japan in 1778, so he cannot be using it 50 years before he got it.  (Practical note: This was simply because it wasn’t realised that the handguard and curved blade, seen briefly in the flashback, actually belonged to Duncan’s katana and not another saber of some sort).
