Leeds was our first venture into
Europe which was no mean feat given the exchange rate! We
soldiered on and decided to hold the event in the Royal
Armouries, a spectacular setting and a most appropriate one for
a Highlander event. The Armouries now house the royal
jewels as well as displaying anything and everything one could
ever want to know about arms through the ages. We hadn't
quite figured on a blizzard - still - these things are sent to
try us. We had hoped to reunite the 4 Horsemen however
Valentine was unable to attend as he was starring in his John
Lennon production in Sydney. I did a video "Hello" with
him before I left Sydney and we also spoke with Val during the
event.
The convention was held in the
beautiful theater at the Armouries which also had a balcony
where the guests could amuse themselves without interrupting
proceedings. It also made for some wonderful photo
opportunities.
A particularly poignant memory for me
is meeting Bill Panzer who caught a train up from London for the
event. Bill always loved meeting the fans and I will never
forget the site of him walking out of the mist at the train
station with his beret and scarf and flowing coat - always so
dapper and so debonair. Of course, little did we know that
this would be Bill's last event.
Our guest list was as follows:
- Adrian Paul
- Peter Wingfield
- Marcus Testory
- Richard Ridings
The evening concert was graced by
Valentine's parents who enjoyed watching a scene from
Valentine's play that I had videoed in Sydney. Richard
Ridings had composed a very touching song that paid homage to
Adrian's work with his PEACE Fund and the night concluded with a
concert from the very talented Marcus Testory and his band.
CARMEL - following doesn't fit - it's HLWW8 - however, have left it here as you'll need to replace with what AP actually did do - the airport security routine. My wording wont be good enough.
As
if we had not been showered with enough, we were then treated to
a reunion scene between Duncan and Amanda, written especially
for the convention by David Abramowitz. The years simply
fell away as we watched Adrian and Elizabeth fall right back
into our beloved Duncan and Amanda - a scene that concluded with
a tango!
